Scalp micropigmentation

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) uses a fine needle to apply pigment to the upper layers of the scalp, providing a quick solution to hide hair thinning, baldness,  scalp scars and other imperfections. This method is versatile as it can complement hair transplants alongside other hair loss treatments.

All about Scalp micropigmentation

This describes scalp micropigmentation, a cosmetic procedure that involves tattooing the scalp to mimic the appearance of hair. The specialised pigment is injected at a shallow depth using a needle device, with single-use-needle nozzles covering small areas and roller devices with cross-shaped needles covering larger areas. After the cosmetic pigment is applied, the areas affected by alopecia appear to have shaved hair.

Scalp micropigmentation is different from other non-surgical procedures. It is not a substitute for hair transplantation as the micropunctures do not penetrate deep into the normal skin or affect the hair follicles. In addition, trichopigmentation, as it is also called, differs from traditional tattooing in that it uses organic dyes free of chemical contaminants and aluminium. The dots of pigment gradually fade over 2-3 years, depending on factors such as the depth of application and individual skin characteristics.

Depending on the degree of hair loss, full pigmentation can be done in different ways:
– Full pigmentation treats the entire scalp in cases of total baldness.
– Zonal pigmentation targets specific areas.
– Spot pigmentation creates the illusion of hair on larger areas contrasting with the scalp.
Artists use linear, scatter and spotting techniques to achieve a natural look, combining them effectively, choosing an appropriate shade and ensuring a safe pigment depth.

Scalp micro-pigmentation is available to people over 18, and both men and women are eligible for the procedure. It is recommended in certain circumstances, such as:

  • need to hide the zonal bald spots, visually add extra density to sparse and thin hair;
  • instead of pattern baldness, you want to have a shaved head.
  • The pigment can disguise scars, scars, modelling a beautiful contour “hair cover”.

The hair tattooing process is not a permanent solution like a hair transplant. Achieving the desired results requires several sessions and regular visits to a specialist.

While scalp micro-pigmentation (SMP) is an affordable treatment option for hair loss, it does not stimulate growth. Hair tattooing can only give the appearance of short hair, so it is unsuitable for those who want the look of long hair.

Avoiding antibiotics and blood thinners for 5-7 days before the scalp micro-pigmentation is essential. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol the day before the procedure. Shaving the head is also part of the preparation process. Separating long natural hair follicles is necessary to prevent the dye from sticking, which can complicate and prolong the procedure. The master’s work involves several stages:

  • Antiseptic treatment of the skin;

  • A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area to be treated;

  • Application of the pigment;

  • Re-application of antiseptic.

1st treatment session lasts 1.5-3 hours.

Scalp micropigmentation is a minimally invasive advanced technique that uses tiny microneedles to tattoo the skin. The main advantage of this procedure is that it creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles, mimicking the look of natural hair growth and regrowth. Some people who have undergone this procedure with an inexperienced specialist may end up with a green or blue tint due to the use of low-quality materials. Clients often have questions about how the pigment is applied, how it differs from natural hair colour and how to choose the suitable pigment colour for their scalp. To comprehend how an experienced professional achieves an ideal colour match and conceals any imperfections, it is crucial to consider the intricacies of the process.

  • Coloured materials are avoided in the procedure to prevent artificial epidermis colouring. Specialised permanent makeup uses only black pigment;
  • The colour is mixed with distilled water. If the colour is too light, increase the amount of water in the pigment; if it’s too dark, use a more concentrated substance or reduce the amount of water for tattooing;
  • Natural materials are used to avoid any colour change.

Scalp Micropigmentation can cause damage to the skin, leading to reddening and mild scalp irritation. By the third day after tattooing, crusts will form over the wounds, and slight itching may occur. It is essential not to remove the crusts forcibly; it is best to allow them to dry and fall off naturally. During recovery, it is recommended:

  • lubricate the tattoo with a regenerating ointment;
  • wear a hat to protect you from the sun;
  • exclude visiting the pool, bath, and gym.

Full rehabilitation takes 10 to 30 days, depending on the treatment area.

Trichopigmentation is not recommended for people with scalp conditions such as seborrhoea, furunculosis, psoriasis and mycoses. It is also not advised for people with cancer, diabetes mellitus and coagulopathies. If necessary, the procedure may need to be temporarily postponed to prevent chronic diseases from getting worse and to prevent active infection.

FAQ

A micropigmentation procedure can lower the hair growth line slightly without being too obvious. If the alopecia process has gone too far, a scalp micropigmentation procedure on the hair growth line is not worthwhile, as the dots made will look like a simple darkening on the skin.

Hair micropigmentation creates tiny dots that only look like hair follicles, so it won’t help you recreate the appearance of hair strands. Microblading along the hair growth line is available if you want hair strands. After healing, these strokes look like natural hair. However, there are many potential problems with microblading – mainly blurring and quick disappearance – so many artists are not fans of this procedure.

The dots are placed between the hair strands, so shaving the head is unnecessary. However, skin preparation and micropigmentation can be time-consuming as the technician must carefully comb and separate the hair strands before cleaning the work area.

Of course. The method remains consistent regardless of gender, with adjustments made to the dot pattern depending on the severity of the problem. As a result, the technique effectively helps people with short, medium, brown or long hair.

Like regular tattoos, hair tattoos offer permanent results that gradually fade. Although scalp micropigmentation is a durable, affordable option, it is not permanent and typically lasts between 4 and 10 years on average.

The purpose of a hair tattoo is to conceal bald areas or scars from prior hair transplants or to enhance hair thickness following hair transplant surgery. By strategically deciding where to apply a hair tattoo versus where to perform a hair transplant, a realistic appearance can be achieved due to the scalp’s pigmentation resembling hair colour.

Our experienced medical team will apply a local anaesthetic to numb the scalp before scalp micropigmentation to reduce potential pain or discomfort. The procedure uses tiny needles to apply pigment to the skin, which can cause some minor discomfort. However, most patients find this bearable, and the procedure’s benefits are considered worth the minor discomfort.

Each hair tattoo appointment usually lasts between 3 and 5 hours, with a strong focus on precision to ensure the most realistic result. The length of the session can vary depending on the size of the area to be covered.

It would be best to wait until the healing process is complete, as your body prefers to heal the damaged tissue before stimulating hair growth.

Scalp micropigmentation is permitted in all religious faiths, including Islam. Various sources, such as the European Fatwa Council, consider baldness to be a medical, hormonal condition and its treatment to be a natural remedy.
