Nipple tattoo
A nipple tattoo is a process of placing colour under the skin of the breast areola to improve aesthetics and raise a woman’s self-confidence. Some use this tattooing technique to cover natural flaws or deal with post-surgical complications.

Reasons
Colour correction
Indications:
- nipple vitiligo;
- the natural colour is not bright enough;
- discolouration (e.g. blueness) for various reasons;
- loss of natural areola pigment after tanning;
- imbalance between areola and skin tone.
Changes in shape, colour, asymmetry
Indications:
- asymmetry after breastfeeding, surgery;
- unattractive, non-voluminous colour of the areola;
- unclear contour;
- desire to make the natural nipple larger or change the shape dramatically (e.g., in the form of a heart);
Scars after surgery
Indications:
After undergoing mammaplasty with incisions made through the areola, the patient is expected to have scars around the natural nipples that typically encircle the entire circumference. These scar tissues are usually thin and not very noticeable. Still, in some cases, significant deformities may exist that even laser resurfacing cannot fully address, necessitating camouflage to match the colour of the areola.
Areola reconstruction
Indications:
Absence of the nipple after surgery. Reconstruction, drawing the non-existent areola, is designed to improve the quality of life of a woman and prevent insecurity.
It is essential to understand that nipple tattooing provides only a visual effect; the texture of the skin and the scar remain the same. This procedure can be done in the case of full skin recovery after surgery, with the permission of the surgeon who operated. It usually happens at least six months after cosmetic surgery.
Procedure
It is best to avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine the day before the micropigmentation process. Avoiding blood thinners is critical since they affect blood pressure, lymph flow, and overall results. If these recommendations are not followed, you may experience nipple bleeding, colour washout, and poor tattoo pigment retention.
Before the procedure, the specialist conducts a consultation in which the patient discusses their reasons for obtaining a tattoo, the desired outcome, and the suitable pigments
- Disinfect the treatment area
- Makes a sketch
- Applies anaesthesia
- Then begins the process of tattooing itself. Depending on the client’s wishes and the desired result, there are options for blending or drawing a precise contour.
- The average duration of the session is two hours.
After 1-2 months, a follow-up visit with the specialist is necessary to check for any pigment fading and ensure the final result is stable. Pigment retention on the body tends to last longer than on the face, usually around five years, although this can vary depending on individual body features, hormone function and metabolism. However, a touch-up may be required after one or two years to achieve the desired colour saturation.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and lactation period;
- High temperature;
- Period of exacerbation of any diseases;
- Insulin-dependent form of diabetes mellitus;
- Thrombopathy, haemophilia;
- Presence of keloid and hypertrophic scars;
- Epilepsy;
- Bronchial asthma;
- AIDS, HIV, hepatitis;
- Alcohol or drug intoxication.
Relative contraindications
- Allergic reactions to anaesthesia;
- Carrying out the procedure the day before and during the first days of menstruation. During this period, bleeding could increase due to lowering haemoglobin levels and a change in pain tolerance.
- Drinking alcohol on the night before the procedure. It can significantly reduce the efficacy of anaesthetic medicines.
- Permanent make-up treatment during the healing time following various severe cosmetic procedures in the area of contact (peels, dermabrasion);
- Applying permanent makeup while taking specific medications, such as corticosteroids, potent antibiotics, blood thinners, or vitamin A, can diminish the procedure’s results.
Aftercare
Swelling and increased sensitivity of the nipples may occur for up to five days after the dermopigmentation areola procedure. There is no reason to fear as long as you follow the specialist’s advice, as the breast skin will return to normal soon.
Rules to follow:
- After the procedure, you should not visit the bath, sauna, or long-term hot tub for about a week. Increased temperature accelerates blood flow, which can provoke or increase inflammation and lead to pigment loss.
During the week, avoiding solariums and sunbathing on the beach is best, especially without a top. Consuming alcoholic beverages, energy drinks, or blood thinners is also forbidden.
- Your bra should have a soft base of natural fabric. A dense foam cup will protect the areola from possible accidental injuries.
After four weeks of applying the pigment, a correction will be needed to enhance the appearance, smooth out imperfections, and ensure a more consistent shade.
With professional application and regular care following the master’s aftercare instructions, the areola will maintain its beauty for several years. A refresh or renewal can be done after 1 or 2 years to restore the tone to a fresh and bright look.
