Ombre effect
The ombre technique is one of the newest lip tattooing techniques. It implies the presence of a smooth gradient between several perfect shades. Up to five different colours that harmonize with each other can be used to create such an effect. As a result, the lips become more expressive and noticeably more voluminous, and the semi-permanent makeup looks flashy and spectacular.
Ombre can be performed in natural shades, close to the lips’ natural colour, or brighter, saturated lip tones. The final result will depend on the choice of natural pigments: if, in the first case, the lips become more voluminous and precise but at the same time look discreet and 100% natural, in the second case, the final image will be bright and spectacular.
In addition, cosmetic tattooing can be glossy, visually resembling a decorative gloss, matte, imitating the skin’s natural state, or discreet lipstick—a broad palette of modern professional compositions guarantees any desired result.
Who is this procedure suitable for?
The ombre effect can slightly accentuate the natural beauty and completely change the original appearance – it all depends on the peculiarities of using the dye and the selected shades. That’s why this technique is suitable for almost all members of the fair sex without exception – those who strive for naturalness and want to attract maximum attention at first sight.
The combination of several harmonizing shades not only emphasizes the existing natural shape and skin tone of the lips but also corrects some existing defects:
- asymmetrical, inexpressive or non-ideal lip shape;
- drooping corners, blurred contours;
- pigmentation defects, including the presence of light or, conversely, pathological dark areas;
- lack of natural volume;
- cosmetic imperfections in the mouth area (scars, pigment spots, etc.).
Contraindications
Even minimally invasive intervention, which includes permanent makeup, has several contraindications that should be considered before going to the master. These include:
- immunodeficiency virus;
- oncology and related courses of chemotherapy;
- diabetes mellitus;
- taking anticoagulants, a course of antibiotic therapy and drugs that have blood-thinning side effects;
- moles and papillomas in the mouth area;
- cold sore, dermatitis, bleeding fissures and other dermatological defects of the lip mucosa;
- age less than 18 years;
- carrying and breastfeeding a baby.
Preparation
- Take anti-cold sore medication a few days before visiting the salon. Sometimes, due to the mechanical actions of the machine, there is herpes, so it is better to protect yourself.
- Exclude the intake of alcohol and blood thinners.
- Use hygienic lipsticks and balms so the lip tattooing colour lays down as evenly as possible.
Sketch
- The first thing to do is to sketch your future permanent makeup. This allows you to see the appearance of your new lips before the procedure!
- The sketch and natural lip colour are selected individually according to your facial features and skin type. Thousands of cosmetic tattoo procedures have been performed, allowing our masters to create your exclusive image easily.
- We start the procedure only after you approve the sketch (sketching time can take up to 30 minutes).
Prepare before starting
Proper preparation for a tattoo should begin well before the session, as it is essential to ensure that the skin of the lips is in perfect condition. Therefore, it is necessary to follow specific recommendations.
- Moisturising and nourishing the skin two weeks before the permanent makeup session is recommended. Specifically, balms and creams containing vitamins, plant oils, and nourishing extracts may be beneficial.
- It is recommended to regularly clean the lips with a gentle exfoliation to remove keratinous scales, allowing nourishing balms to be more effective. This will result in even and natural pigment application.
- Anti-herpes prevention is essential in preparing for a lip tattoo in the ombré technique. If blisters are present, the procedure may need to be postponed. But what if the blisters appear after the pigment has been introduced before the tattoo fully healed? Therefore, people with weakened immune systems who are prone to lip herpes should consult a doctor and take anti-herpes medications to prevent a rash recurrence.
- Both herpes and other skin defects in the mouth area can impact the healing process of the pigment. Therefore, it is essential to take precautions to protect the lips from wind, cold, and other factors that may cause damage to the sensitive skin before getting a tattoo.
Two days before the scheduled session, it is recommended to avoid taking anticoagulants, antibiotics, strong coffee, tea, alcoholic beverages, and energy drinks. This is a standard requirement for any permanent makeup procedure, including ombré tattooing.
Procedure
- Before the procedure, a contract is signed, and informed consent is obtained.
- The lips tattooing takes up to 2 hours, along with sketching.
- Before the procedure, the master will offer you two-stage anaesthesia to minimize unpleasant sensations. Anaesthesia is applied superficially in the form of gel or cream.
- After the procedure, a minor swelling may diminish within 2 – 3 hours.
- To reduce morning swelling, it is not suggested to drink alcohol in the evening after the procedure. Instead, drink plenty of water.
Healing
- The quality and the final result largely depend on the proper care during the permanent healing phase.
- Immediately after the procedure, the master will give you all the necessary recommendations, a memo and a special care kit.
- On the 2nd day, the colour of your lips becomes more saturated and bright. A slight swelling is possible, which subsides after 3-4 hours.
- On the third day, your lips will peel slightly, lasting 1 to 3 days.
- The primary healing time of an initial tattoo is seven days.
- Complete healing takes up to 28 days
- Correction for cosmetic lip tattoos is required in 95% of cases.
Correction
Let’s try to understand in general terms why correction is needed:
- Correction of the permanent lip is done in 95% of cases
This is primarily due to the peculiarities of the human body. - The body recognizes the mineral pigment as unfamiliar and actively resists it, causing the colour to lighten by 50-70%.
- In most cases, if you are given the option to make a permanent decision for 3-5 years without the possibility of correction, there is a high likelihood (90%) that you will end up with unwanted shades and deeply ingrained mineral pigment. This may lead to the necessity of later removing the permanent option using a laser or remover.
During the additional touch-up session, the body has become accustomed to the amounts of pigment and will no longer reject it as harshly as previously, allowing better colour retention.
- The correction allows the specialist to get the proper deeper or lighter shade, saturation, and firmness while filling in any gaps that may emerge throughout the healing process. Typically, one major procedure and one correction are necessary.
- After correction, permanent is worn for up to 2 years.
The two-step procedure lets you get a nice, genuine lipstick colour while avoiding undesirable tones like blue lips.
- In the future, if you wish to preserve the outcome, it is recommended to renew every 18 to 24 months.
Result
- You will see the final result of the first treatment after 28 days.
- Correction is done not earlier than a month after the primary procedure
- Permanent lip will be with you for up to 2 years.
- If you take proper care of your lips and make updates every 1.5 – 2 years, permanent will please you much more than 2.5 years.
- Impress and inspire others with your new, unforgettable image; remember, you are the most beautiful!
Aftercare
After a permanent lip tattoo, it is necessary to adhere to specific rules and recommendations:
Liquid droplets may appear on the lips on the first day and be gently removed using a tissue. For this reason, it is advised to use a moist cloth soaked with a tiny amount of chlorhexidine.
Afterwards, a film that cannot be removed will develop over the sensitive skin. To relieve the tightness and dryness, the crust can be moisturized with specialized ointment supplied by the specialist. This will help heal the skin’s surface and reduce discomfort.
- During the first three days, avoid heavy colds and wind and make as little contact with water as possible with your lips. Liquids can only be drunk through a tube, so avoid scorching drinks.
- Going to a swimming pool, sauna, or solarium in the upcoming month is not advisable. If the treatment is done during the summer, using lip sunscreen for 21 days before going outside is essential.

What factors influence how long cosmetic lip tattooing lasts?
The longevity of the procedure’s results is influenced by both the quality of the procedure and the unique characteristics of the individual’s body, age, level of care, and active lifestyle. Skin pigment tends to last longer on older skin and may fade more quickly on younger skin.
Regular sun exposure, exercise, and sauna visits can shorten the life of cosmetic lip tattoos, mainly if your lips are worn or dry.
How much does it cost?
The price for an ombré lip tattooing procedure varies depending on the master you select.
The average price with an expert cost is $500 to $800 AUD.
